· Milk – dairy or non dairy
· Glass Jar
· Non-metal stirring utensil
· Cheesecloth or sieve
· Rubber Band or string
1. Prepare your Jar – Sterilize a glad jar to ensure a clean environment for the fermentation process.
2. Add Kefir Grains – Place the kefir gains into the jar. The amount you use will depend on your desired quantity of kefir; generally, a tablespoon of grins for one to two cup of milk works well.
3. Add Milk – Pour the milk into the jar, leaving some space at the top for expansion during fermentation.
4. Mix – Gently stir the milk and kefir grains with a non-metal utensil
5. Cover and Ferment – Cover the jar with a cheesecloth, securing it with a rubber band or string. This allows air circulation while keeping out contaminants. Place the jar in a warm, undisturbed spot for about 24-48 hours.
6. Check Consistency – After the fermentation period, check the consistency of the kefir. It should have thickened and have a tangy taste. If its reached your desired texture removed the grains.
7. Strain and Store – Strain the kefir into another clean container to separate the grains. The strained kefir is ready to be consumed.
